Best Bluetooth Headphones for Running
Headphones designed for runners need to have a few features that make them useful on the run. They have to fit securely in the ears and not fall out when the runner is on the go and they need to be sweat-proof so that they aren’t destroyed on the first workout. But those aren’t the only things a good pair of headphones for runners needs to accomplish. Below are some of the features that runners should look for when searching for headphones that can be used for running, biking or just about any other athletic endeavor.
Sweat Proof Standards & What Those Numbers Mean
If you’re like the majority of people, then you have probably looked at those numbers mean to designate water-resistance and water-proofing and have wondered what they mean, then you’ll probably want to take a look at the following list because we’re going to take a mystery out of these designations. Before we begin, however, I have to say that I have listed the IPX0 standard on this list because that basically means the device has no water-resistance whatsoever. Okay, with that cleared up let’s begin.
- IPX1: This device is protected from the occasional raindrop but anything more than that would probably destroy it.
- IPX2: This standard will protect from water spray that hit the device at an angle up to 15-degrees. This may seem technical, but keep in mind we didn’t design the standards.
- IPX3: At this level, the device is protected from water sprayed at up to a 60-degree angle.
- IPX4: At this standard, the device is protected against water splashing from any angle.
- IPX5: The device is water-resistant against water jets.
- IPX6: The device is protected from more powerful jets of water. Keep in mind that this is still water-resistance and not waterproof.
- IPX7: The item is waterproof and can be dropped into 3-feet of water for a few moments. We added the last part because how long it can be submerged may change from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Ear Buds With Ear Hooks
Most runners use earbuds when they are running. This is because they tend to be easier to wear, fit securely in the ears and aren’t very noticeable. Runners may also want to check into ear hooks which can help keep them in place during long runs or workouts.
Another thing that needs to be considered is sound quality. After all, having your music sound like it’s being delivered through a tin can isn’t going to motivate anyone to get to run or do anything else for that matter. Most earbuds use 8mm sound drivers, which are pretty much the standard for earbuds. However, there are also ones with 10mm sound drivers and they usually deliver a better sound but there is a drawback to them. They may be a little bit larger and some runner might not want this extra earbud size in their ears. It’s something to think about.
Sound Proofing & Being Aware of Your Surroundings
Another thing that runners need to consider is if they want noise cancellation in their headphones or not. While most earbuds don’t offer complete soundproofing, many of them have gotten pretty good at offering noise cancellation. Which may or may not be a helpful feature if you are a runner. Some runners prefer to block out as much of the outside world as possible while they run, while others want to keep situational awareness so they are aware of traffic and other dangers. Which feature you choose depends upon whether you’re a runner in the first camp or the second.
How long the earphones charge and how long the work after being charged is another important feature to consider. There are headphones that can charge in as quickly as an hour and there are some that take 2-3 hours to charge. As is the case with charge time, there are also some headphones which only have a 4-hour play time but other which can last up to 8-hours or even longer.
This is another feature that is preferred by some runners but might not be a big deal to others. Basically its a magnet in the earbuds that allow the ends to stick to each other. This allows them to be worn around the neck during those cool-down periods. Of course, it’s an option that may or may not be something that a runner absolutely needs to have.
