Selecting the Best Earbuds Under 100 Dollars
Not that long ago, I wrote an article on how to find the best earbuds for under fifty dollars which had some pretty good ideas on how to get an inexpensive pair of earbuds. So it’s not surprising when my friends found out I was going to be writing an article on finding the best headphones under one hundred dollars, they’d ask me why I was writing essentially the same article. After all, aren’t these two articles going to be redundant, my friends asked? And to that, I replied to them in the same way as I am going to reply now. No, they are too separate articles because there are big differences in headphones in the $0 to $50 dollar range and the $51 to $100 dollar range.
Without a doubt, there’s a big difference between earbuds fifty dollars and under and ones just under a hundred dollars. Most sub-50 dollar models sound a little bit better than the headphones that came with your smartphone. However, once you rise above this mark, then you will notice that models in the $70 to $90 dollar range which have really enhanced sound quality. And they also usually have more features or at least better features. All of this simply means that units under fifty dollars are still decent, but if you can spend a little bit more, then you’ll get more in the higher price brackets. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the features you should look for on models below a hundred dollars.
Just the Tip
Many of the earbuds in this price range give the user additional ear tips with the headphones. This allows these headphones to be used comfortably by a wide selection of people. Most of them use rubber tips, which are often hard to fit to a user’s ears, but some of them also provide foam tips, which do a better job at molding to the person’s ear canal. However, rubber tips do have an advantage over foam, in fact, they have two. They are easier to clean and they allow more air flow. So which ones the user prefers will depend on their personal preferences.
Microphone and Inline Controls
Another feature that users are probably going to want in a pair of headphones in this price range is a microphone and an inline control dongle. These two items are a must have if the user intends on answering phone calls using their smartphone but is also useful for people who want to adjust their music’s volume or skip tracks. Some models place these controls at the bottom of the audio Y cable and others place it around the earbuds themselves.
Water-resistance is another important feature that can be found in headphones in this price range. While you may not think that you need your earphones to be water-resistant, there are actually quite a few scenarios in which it could come in handy. For example, in the gym when you’re sweating or while running in the rain. If you do want a water-proof model, be sure to choose one that’s at least IPX7 or above.
Ear hooks are either something that many consumers completely ignore or completely hate. If you don’t pay much attention to them, then maybe it’s time to think about getting a pair of headphones with ear hooks. After all, they do a pretty good job at holding the earphones in place, especially when the user is active. However, if you’re in the camp that completely hates them, then choose a model with tighter fitting ear tips and go ahead and forget about the ear hooks.
There are a few models in this category which use carrying cases. This enables the earbuds to be safely stored and many of the cases themselves are a portable charger and will charge the earpieces while they are being stored. Now, whether a user needs this features is completely up to them but it is a nice feature to have, as long as you don’t let the case overshadow everything else you want to get from a pair of earbuds.
